Sea Lions survive late scare to defeat Cougars

Box Score

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Savannah Erskine scored 19 points, including six in the final four minutes, while handing out six assists to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 65-57 win over local rival Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 5).

The non-conference victory moves PLNU to 10-9 on the season (7-7 PacWest) and drops the Cougars' to 9-16.

After Cal State San Marcos cut PLNU's double-digit lead to one point (52-51) with 4:00 remaining, Erskine calmly ran an efficient Sea Lions' offense down the stretch to earn the win. First she found Callie Rhoads for a layup and then made a layup of her own to put Point Loma up five (56-51).

Point Loma continued the run with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Carlotta Kloppenburg and four more free throws from Erskine to turn a one-point lead into an 11-point advantage before settling on the eight-point margin of victory.

"The key today was patience," said PLNU senior forward Abby Boorman. "We stuck together and played hard throughout the game."

Erin Andersen was the second leading scorer for PLNU with 17 points. She also pulled in eight rebounds, had two blocks and four steals. Callie Rhoads added 11 points and Abby Boorman grabbed 15 rebounds.

Sherika Miller led the Cougars with 18 points on 8-of-18 shooting and nine rebounds. The shooting was not only tough for Miller on the evening as Point Loma held CSUSM to just 31 percent shooting in the game, including 18 percent (2-of-11) from 3-point range.

"It has taken us awhile to find our rhythm since losing Jessica (Escorza) but we are now going to keep getting better the rest of the season," Boorman continued. "I'm trusting my teammates and myself more. The relationships you build with your teammates are bonds that go beyond basketball."

Point Loma will return to conference play on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it travels to Fresno Pacific to face the Sunbirds in a 2:30 p.m. tipoff.
