No. 9 Cal State LA slips past Sea Lions, 1-0

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - The brutal early season schedule continued for the Point Loma men's soccer team on Friday when it came up on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision on the road against No. 9 Cal State Los Angeles in a non-conference match.

The match was a grind for both squads with only three shots on goal over the 90 minutes. However, Sea Lions (0-2-1) found themselves on the short end with the Golden Eagles (3-0-0) netting the only goal of the match in the 26th minute.

The lone score came on a direct kick following a PLNU foul at the top of the box. Sigifredo Torres took the free kick went goalie side. His shot hit off the post but took a Cal State LA-bounce for the goal.

After that score CSULA had just one other quality scoring opportunity but the PLNU defense thwarted that opportunity to keep it a one score match.

The Sea Lions though just could never get that good look themselves. They had four shots on goal, including two by Daniel ten Bosch.

"We are playing these teams even and continue to take steps in the right direction," said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf. "We are not getting results but I'm encouraged as we continue to get better overall.

"We have to stay committed to our system and believe results will follow," continued Wolf.

Point Loma will now prepare to face Fresno Pacific at home in its Pacific West Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11:00 a.m.
