Late goal pushes Broncos past Sea Lions

Box Score

POMONA, Calif. - Tuesday night marked another tough match in the early schedule for the Point Loma men's soccer team as the Sea Lions came up on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision against Cal Poly Pomona in a non-conference contest.

The Broncos (5-0-1) broke through with the only goal of the match in the 84th minute when Abiel Coronado knocked in a cross from Michael Torres. However, the nature at which it unfolded was unique as it came on the free kick just 13 seconds after a red card. The ball even bounced around in the box but Coronado was in the right place to score the goal.

The Sea Lions' (0-4-1) best chances also came on free kicks but the equalizing goal eluded them. This was the third one-goal loss for PLNU in its last four matches. It is also Point Loma's fourth match in five decided by one goal or less.

"Overall the guys played hard but if we can't score goals, we can't win games," said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf. "It was a dead even game, with dead even chances but they took their chance (and scored)."

There was 22 total shots in the match, eight by Point Loma, but only four on goal. Christopher Tellez came off the bench to lead PLNU with three shots. Avrin Yakou had two saves for the Sea Lions and CPP's Fernando Pablo Quevedo posted one.

Point Loma will now prepare to step back into Pacific West Conference play on Saturday when the team travels to Azusa Pacific for a match under the lights starting at 5:30 p.m.
