Aztecs nip Sea Lions 1-0 in crosstown battle

Box Score Box score

SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions played a level up tonight as they faced NCAA Division I and Pacific-12 affiliate member San Diego State on the road. The Point Loma men's soccer team hung with SDSU throughout the match but the Aztecs made a goal in the 15th minute stand up for a 1-0 win in a night contest on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The only score came on a corner kick. The ball was served into the box but it was deflected away from the PLNU goal out to David Olsen who took the shot from 12 yards out and drilled it into the net for the match's only goal.

After the goal the Sea Lions would play fairly even with the Aztecs. SDSU had just one more shot than PLNU (9-8) after the goal and both teams had two corner kicks.

"The guys played well," said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf. "It was our best performance from start to finish. The team played really, really hard but we just couldn't get that goal to get a result."

The Sea Lions will now face their toughest road test of the year when they travel to Hawaii for four matches in eight days. The Sea Lions will start the trip at Hawaii Hilo on Saturday, Oct. 4 and close out the road swing at Chaminade on Saturday, Oct. 11.

"We have a big challenge in front of us to get wins first and foremost," said Wolf. "Hopefully this trip can help us turn this thing around and get some dashes in the win column."
