HILO, Hawaii -
Jessica Escorza recorded her first career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 72-57 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
With the victory the Sea Lions close their Hawaii road swing at 2-1. They are now 3-3 in the Pacific West Conference and 5-8 overall. With the loss Hawaii Hilo drops to 4-7 and to 3-4 in the PacWest.
Escorza went 4-of-7 from the field and 10-of-11 at the free throw line. All 11 of her rebounds came on the defensive end as PLNU won the rebounding battle 42-36. She also added four assists. Even more impressive is that Escorza earned a triple-double in her career before ever earning a double-double. She recorded just the second triple-double in school history last season in the regular season finale against California Baptist but she never had only a double-double before tonight. She also played the final 8:38 in the second half with four fouls.
"Jessica settled down and let the game come to her tonight," said Point Loma head coach
Bill Westphal. "She got into some foul trouble but she played through that by playing smart. She got her free throws and her normal high-percentage shots. This was one of her best games of the season.
Escorza was also joined in double-figures by
Paola Roa (16),
Roya Rustamzada (14) and
Madison West (10).
The Sea Lions took advantage of their chances at the line going 23-of-25 while UHH hit only 12-of-22 from the charity stripe.
"We emphasize driving when you aren't making 3-pointers and we did it very well tonight because we got a lot more free throws than they did."
Point Loma's defense also had one of its best games of the season. It held UHH to just 25 percent shooting in the first half, and 32 percent in the game. This is the third time this season the Sea Lions have held an opponent to less than 32 percent shooting.
Point Loma will now return home to host Dominican (CA) in conference game on Monday, Jan. 12. They will also welcome in Academy of Art on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Both games will tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
