Sea Lions sweep Penguins on Dig Pink Night

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team swept Dominican (CA) 25-13, 25-18 and 25-18 on Thursday, Oct. 15 in front of hundreds of pink-clad fans in the Sea Lions' annual Dig Pink match.

The Sea Lions have now won back-to-back matches to improve to 10-8 on the season and even their record in the PacWest at 5-5. The Penguins fall to 5-9 (2-6 PacWest).

Point Loma posted its second-best defensive performance of the season to earn the victory. The Sea Lions held the Penguins to just a .042 hitting percentage as they had 18 errors to go along with 23 kills. Only one student-athlete from DUC had over four kills.

Meanwhile, Point Loma posted a .214 hitting percentage led by Bethany Mandon, who had eight kills and just one error for a .467 hitting percentage. Cayleen Harty added nine kills (and only one error) in 21 attempts for a .381 hitting percentage. Heather Leavitt again paced PLNU in kills. She posted 13 finishers along with three service aces but just missed another double-double as she recorded nine digs. Savannah Wedemeyer added 15 digs and four kills to go along with her match-high 30 assists. This was her fifth double-double of the season. Christin Fisher added 19 digs.

PLNU hit .226 in the first set with just four errors, while DUC hit -.053 in the first set with nine errors. Point Loma was able to use this hitting edge to seize momentum in the match, and they never gave it back en route to the three-set sweep.

All the members of the Point Loma volleyball team wore pink jerseys in the match as part of Side-outs annual Dig Pink campaign. PLNU ASB also handed out 300 pink t-shirts to students to promote ongoing breast cancer awareness.

The Sea Lions will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they host Holy Names at 5:00 p.m. This will close out Point Loma's six-match homestand.
