SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team outhit Holy Names by nearly .400 percent in a three-set sweep of the Hawks 25-7, 25-15 and 25-12 on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The Sea Lions have now won three straight to improve to 11-8 on the season and to 6-5 in the PacWest. The loss sent HNU to 2-17 on the year and to 0-10 in the PacWest.
Eleven different Sea Lions posted kills in the match as PLNU won the hitting battle .369 to -.022.
Heather Leavitt had a team-leading eight kills as she hit .467. She is now just three kills behind
Alyssa Dwyer for 10th on the Sea Lions all-time list.
Cayleen Harty added five kills with no errors and a .500 hitting percentage. Even more impressive is the Sea Lions had six different student-athletes record assists.
"Something we have really stressed this season and particularly this week is our out of system setting," said PLNU head coach
Jonathan Scott. "We had 14 assists that were not from our setters and that really stood out because we were able to maintain focus in some specific areas that we have stressed."
The match was never much in doubt as the Sea Lions won the first set in dominant fashion 25-7. Holy Names' only lead of the match came in the second set when they scored the opening point. This domination by the Sea Lions allowed coach Scott to try some different combinations on the floor.
"It's quite uncommon for it to feel the same out there (when we make a sub)," said Scott. "Often times it is difficult because the focus changes to that person. I was really proud of everyone for keeping it team-centered the entire time no matter who was on the floor."
Point Loma hit at least .333 in all three sets en route to the win. The Sea Lions also won the blocking battle 8.5 to 1.0 and had eight service aces to their one.
The Sea Lions will now go on the road to face Academy of Art on Friday, Oct. 23 and Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, Oct. 24.
"We have to continue to respect each and every opportunity," Scott explained. "We have been guilty of not doing that a couple times this year, so that is something we are really trying to address. We are just focusing on the next (match)."
