Efficient offense & defense leads PLNU past ARTU

SAN FRANCISCO - For the second time in 10 days the Point Loma volleyball team defeated Academy of Art in four sets. Today it was the Sea Lions using a .200 hitting percentage advantage (.362 to .162) to win on the road 25-19, 25-18, 25-27 and 25-11 (Oct. 23).
 
This was the fourth straight win for the Sea Lions (12-8), which moved to sixth place in the PacWest standings with a 7-5 record.  The loss drops ART to 4-9 in the PacWest (6-13 overall).
 
Point Loma posted a .362 hitting percentage in the match and held ARTU to a .162 mark. Six Sea Lions hit at least .365 in the match. Bethany Mandon controlled the middle with 13 kills and just one error for a .545 hitting percentage. Cayleen Harty was just off Mandon's pace as she added 11 kills and just one error for a .435 hitting percentage. Savannah Wedemeyer, Dana Williams and Dixie Cooper also all posted hitting percentages over .400.
 
Heather Leavitt turned in one of her best performances of the season, both offensively and defensively. She posted her 14th double-double of the season with 25 kills and 22 digs. Those 25 kills were the third-most for the senior this year, and the digs were the second-most. Leavitt posted a .365 hitting percentage and also added four blocks.  
 
Wedemeyer handed out 53 assists in the four sets and added 10 digs for sixth double-double of the season. As a team, PLNU outblocked ARTU 9.0-4.0 and had eight service aces to the Urban Knights' two.
 
Point Loma will attempt to keep its winning streak going when it faces Dominican (CA) tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
