Concordia nips Sea Lions in high-scoring contest

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Concordia (CA) on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The loss snapped the Sea Lions' five-game winning streak as they fell to 6-4-1 on the season and to 5-2-0 in the PacWest. PLNU is now five points behind conference leader Dixie State (20 points). The victory pushed Concordia's record to 4-7 (4-3 PacWest).

After a scoring flurry in the first half, which saw the two teams trade four goals in less than a three minute timeframe, the game settled down until Isaac Gettis broke the tie with the would-be game-winning goal in the 62nd minute.

"We are obviously disappointed to concede three goals," said PLNU head coach Phil Wolf. "When we score two goals we feel pretty confident we can win the game so to concede three was very disappointing."

Daniel ten Bosch had a hand in both the Sea Lion goals during the first half. First he tied the match just 42 seconds after CUI had taken the lead on a shot from 40 yards away that found the back of the net. He then assisted on a goal to Eduardo Gallardo in the 22nd minute to tie the match at 2-2, where it would remain until halftime.

"The two goals we scored were top class," added Wolf. "We had great team movement and passing.

"You don't expect to score that quickly but we were able to put some things together and got in," he added. "It was crazy for a couple minutes, but not much defending which has not been our issue to this point in the year."

Ryan Naime had two assists for the Eagles in the match, including on the game-winner.

PLNU ended up outshooting Concordia in the match 10-9, but not on shots on-goal (5-4). Avrin Yakou had two saves for the Sea Lions, while Christian Tait and Jordan Brinkley each played a half for CUI, making a save apiece.

The Sea Lions will now travel to the Bay Area to face Academy of Art on Thursday, Oct. 22 and Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, Oct. 24. Both matches will start at 1:00 p.m.

"Every time you drop a game the next one is more important," explained Wolf. "The next matches at Academy of Art and Notre Dame de Namur are huge."
