SAN DIEGO -
Nico Tagaloa,
Daniel ten Bosch and
Andrew Ritchie all delivered second-half goals as the Point Loma men's soccer team quickly turned a scoreless tie at the half into a 3-0 victory over Academy of Art on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The Sea Lions (7-4-1, 6-2-0 PacWest) have won six of their last seven matches and are sitting in sole possession of third place in the PacWest standings with 18 points. ARTU dropped to 5-6-2 with the loss (3-4-1 PacWest).
After a scoreless first half, PLNU's conditioning and team depth proved to be the difference in the victory. Tagaloa put PLNU on the board first in the 62nd minute on a shot from just six yards away.
Daniel ten Bosch then added a second goal only three minutes later.
Patrice Glaser assisted on both goals and now tied for second in the PacWest with five assists.
"We need those guys in our attack," said PLNU head coach
Phil Wolf about ten Bosch and Tagaloa. "We need them to take chances and perform. It is so important as a group that we take chances. We are doing well and looking dangerous. We are trying to put the emphasis on of a game at a time and not getting ahead of ourselves. They did a great job of that today."
Ritchie added the 'nail in the coffin' with the Sea Lions third goal of the half when he knocked in a penalty kick in the 75th minute. This was the third goal for Ritchie this season, and the second off a penalty kick.
"You can start to see in the second half where our defensive pressure comes through," added Wolf. "Our work rate and mentality in the second half was good for us."
Michael Lambert earned the shutout while making four saves. This was his fourth shutout in seven matches started this season. PLNU is 6-2 in matches in which Lambert plays in goal, and the Sea Lions are outscoring their opponents 11-1 in Lambert's last four starts. Lambert also came through with the defensive play of the match early in the contest, which helped sway momentum towards the Sea Lions.
"They had a big chance right at the beginning of the game that
Michael Lambert snuffed out and that was a huge moment for us," Wolf explained. "After that it was a pretty comprehensive win for us. We were dangerous and created a lot of chances."
PLNU outshot ARTU 20-7 in the match, including 7-4 on shots on goal. Glaser led the Sea Lions with six shots. No student-athlete from ARTU had more than two shots.
The Sea Lions will continue its road trip on Saturday, Oct. 24 against Notre Dame de Namur at 1:30 p.m.
"We have to have another very engaged effort on Saturday, where we are focused on the day and living moment by moment," Wolf said. "In our last performance against Concordia (CA) we had moments where we fell asleep and we can't do that again. Today was a complete performance and we will need that on Saturday against a good Norte Dame de Namur team."
