SAN DIEGO - When the end of October approaches, watch out for the magic of
Eduardo Gallardo. For the second straight season, Gallardo delivered a game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the Point Loma men's soccer team to a 1-0 win. This time it was BYU-Hawaii that fell victim to Gallardo's dramatics as the Sea Lions clipped the Seasiders 1-0 on a goal in the 106th minute.
Â
The victory allows PLNU to close out its 2015 home schedule with a 5-2-2 record as they improved to 8-5-2 overall. The three points from the win also moves PLNU into a tie with Notre Dame de Namur for third place in the PacWest standings. The loss drops BYU-Hawaii into sixth place with a 6-5 PacWest record (8-8-0 overall).
Â
The match had been going for over 105 minutes, and fans could see it as the pace of both teams slowed in the overtime periods, but Gallardo gave the Sea Lions the perfect play to get them out of there with the full three points. Following an attack by BYU-Hawaii, the Sea Lions quickly countered to catch the defense resting.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Avrin Yakou passed the ball ahead to
Nico Tagaloa who quickly headed it down the field to a streaking Gallardo on the right side of the box. He outran his defender to get a 1v1 with the goalie before depositing the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. It was Gallardo's third goal of the season. Last season, Gallardo scored the game-winning goal in a double overtime match at home against Notre Dame de Namur in the 108th minute.
Â
In addition to getting an assist on the game-winning goal, Yakou also earned the shutout. He made two saves en route to earning his second shutout of the season.
Â
In the match, Point Loma outshot the Seasiders 17-5, and had eight corner kicks to BYU-Hawaii's two. Mark Stanley made four saves in the game for the Seasiders.
Â
Point Loma will now head on the road to close out its regular season against Dominican (CA) on Thursday, Nov. 5 and against Holy Names on Saturday, Nov. 7.Â
