SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team dropped its home opener to No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona, 54-53, on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
Â
The Sea Lions are now 1-2 on the season while Cal Poly Pomona improved to 3-0.
Â
Point Loma looked to have the game in hand as it was up by four points (49-45) and had the ball on a fastbreak with 2:27 remaining, but that is when things went wrong and PLNU just seemed to fall out of rhythm. The Sea Lions were outscored 9-4 over the stretch and turned the ball over in critical spots to walk away stunned by the loss.
Â
PLNU led 53-49 after a pair of
Judd Welfringer free throws and just 29 seconds remaining. Jordan Faison made a jumper to pull them within two points with 15 seconds left. CPP then created a turnover on Sea Lions' inbound play and they were able to work it around to Faison who knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer with five seconds on the clock. PLNU would try to counter but
Chad Watkins shot at the buzzer was blocked.
Â
Josh Rodriguez was very impressive in his home debut. The freshman led PLNU in scoring with 12 points. He also added a team-leading eight rebounds and eight assists.
Sam Okhotin and Watkins chipped in with 10 points apiece. Faison led CPP with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
