SAN DIEGO -
Judd Welfringer scored 22 points and the Sea Lions went 14-of-19 from behind the 3-point arc to defeat Cal State East Bay, 91-76, in front of a Homecoming crowd of 1,933 Green & Gold clad Sea Lion fans on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Â
The victory evens Point Loma's record at 2-2 on the season. They have alternated wins and losses their first four games this year. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-2 on the season.
Â
Welfringer spearheaded the Sea Lions' efforts from long range as he went 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He also knocked down 10-of-12 free throws and tied for the team-lead with five rebounds. Welfringer was one of six Sea Lions to hit a 3-point shot in the game.
Sam Okhotin connected on three shots from behind the arc and finished the game with 18 points.
Mike Planeta and
Josh Rodriguez each hit two 3-pointers and finished with 10 and 15 points, respectively. Rodriguez also had seven assists.
Â
"We had good pace tonight and shared the ball well," said Point Loma head coach
Bill Carr. "We got it to the right guys, and that is the recipe for success."
Â
After exchanging baskets early, PLNU went on a 12-0 run to push their lead to 19-6 with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Sea Lions would cling to their double-digit lead throughout the half, and went into the break leading 42-26. In the second half, the Sea Lions never let their lead slip below double-digits. They extended their advantage to 26 points at 62-36, and they never looked back.
Â
Point Loma was able to extend its halftime lead thanks to going 8-for-8 from 3-point range in the second half. PLNU also assisted on 18 of its 25 baskets in the game, as all five starters had at least one assist, and seven different Sea Lions had an assist.
Â
"The ball moves around well (on this team)," explained Carr. "Everyone is okay with passing the ball and that is a good thing for us. I thought everyone that came into the game for us today gave good effort and quality minutes. It was good team win."
Â
The Sea Lions' defense was also a key as it limited the Pioneers to 39 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers. Â Jalen Richard led CSUEB with 19 points and three steals.
Â
Coach Carr was also very complimentary of the raucous PLNU crowd that packed Golden Gymnasium for the 2015 Homecoming game.
Â
"That was great crowd with awesome student support," Carr said. "I know that the guys and myself really appreciate that."
Â
The Point Loma men's basketball team will be back home again on Tuesday, Nov. 23 to take on Young Harris at 7:30 p.m.
Â
"We don't have much time to worry about or celebrate (tonight's) game," said Carr. "We have to get ready on Monday and play a very good team on Tuesday night."Â
