Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Four score in double-figures as PLNU defeats YHC

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team held off a feisty Young Harris squad to earn an 80-75 victory on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

This was the second straight win for PLNU, which improved to 3-2 this season. The loss drops Young Harris to 1-4.

Tanner Lancona had his best game in a Sea Lions' uniform. He scored a career-high 19 points, including 11 in the second half. He was 8-of-13 from the field and knocked down a pair of treys. The junior forward also paced PLNU with six rebounds. Lancona was one of four Sea Lions in double-figures.

Sam Okhotin scored 15 points as he connected on 3-of-6 shots from long range, and also pulled in a season-high five rebounds. Mike Planeta added 10 points and the highlight of the night, with a furious one-handed dunk late in the second half. Chad Watkins came off the bench to provide a scoring punch with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Josh Rodriguez had nine assists and Judd Welfringer added three assists, three blocks and four steals to go along with his eight points.

CJ Wilson matched Lancona's 19 points to pace Young Harris. He was one of four Mountain Lions to reach double-figures in scoring.

The game was back and forth in the first half until PLNU closed the period on a 10-3 run to take a 40-33 lead into the locker room. PLNU pushed its lead to double-figures by scoring the first two baskets after the half but Young Harris would not go away and continued to chip away at the Sea Lions' lead. They cut it to two points at 64-62 with seven minutes left, but a dunk by Zach Burnham and a layup by Lancona extended the lead back to six and YHC would never get closer than four points the rest of the game.

The Sea Lions shot 57 percent in the contest and held YHC to 43 percent shooting. This was significant as the Mountain Lions outrebounded PLNU by eight (39-31), including by 10 on the offensive glass, but the Sea Lions' shooting edge kept them in front.

The PLNU men's basketball team will now go on the road to face Cal State LA on Saturday, Nov. 28. The game will tipoff at 5:00 p.m.
