SAN BERNARDINO - Point Loma baseball swept a doubleheader from Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday (Feb. 14), winning the opener 6-4 and the nightcap 5-1.
Â
The Sea Lions (6-2) won the final three games of the series, bouncing back from Thursday's tough loss, to win the series. CSUSB (2-7) has now lost three straight.
Â
Game 1Anthony Torres doubled in
Preston Sands in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and help lead Point Loma to a 6-4 victory in the opening game.
Â
PLNU put up four runs in the top of the second with a two-out rally which was aided by a costly CSUSB error that allowed two additional runs to score to take a 4-1 led. The Coyotes answered in their half of the third with three runs to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
The game remained deadlocked into the eighth when Sands drew a one-out walk, stole second base, and then scored the eventual winning-run on Torres' double.
Ryan Garcia added a solo home run to lead off the ninth to pad the Sea Lions' lead.
Â
Mickey Dunleavy (2-0) delivered three scoreless innings of relief to keep the game tied and give the Sea Lions the chance at the comeback. He did not allow a hit, and walked just one, while striking out three to earn his second win of the season.
Alex Leal bridged the gap to the closer
Coleman Huntley III with a perfect eighth inning. Huntley then locked down his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Â
Torres and Garcia each had two hits and two RBI for PLNU. Sands drew two walks, two stole bases and scored twice to fuel the bottom of the Sea Lions' lineup along with Torres.
Game 2Trevor Abshire made his second straight quality start for the Sea Lions in a series finale to help them take the series. Today he allowed six hits and just one run in five innings to pick up his second win of the season.
Â
PLNU scored two in the second, with an unearned run and an RBI-double by
Tyler Baker. CSUSB cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth, but Abshire got through the inning to qualify for the win.
Point Loma added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on RBI-singles by
AJ Derr and
Anthony Torres, and another unearned run.
Derr was the only Sea Lion to record a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI out of his leadoff spot.
