Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

PLNU goes on late 13-0 run to upset #13 BYU-Hawaii

SAN DIEGO - Point Loma men's basketball team ended the game on a 13-0 run to upset No. 13 BYU-Hawaii 85-82 on Saturday, Feb. 14 in Golden Gym.

The win clinches a place in the Pacific West Conference tournament for the Sea Lions (19-6, 12-6 PacWest). The victory also tightened up the race in the PacWest standings as the Sea Lions closed the gap on both BYU-Hawaii and California Baptist for third place in the conference.

Point Loma trailed 82-72 with 3:31 left, and then they hit their run. Sam Okhotin made a pair of 3-pointers, including the eventual game-winner, with 1:05 remaining to fuel the run. Marek Klassen also added a trey and a pair of free throws.

"It was nice to see us dig in and fight back," said PLNU head coach Bill Carr. "We had control midway through the second half, and even after they came back on us we did not give up and kept fighting. This was a great win for this group."

Hayden Lescault led four Sea Lions in double-figures with a game-high 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also led PLNU with six assists. Sam Okhotin scored all of his 15 points on 3-pointers (5-of-8), while Klassed added 13 and Junior Morgan chipped in with 12, respectively.

"For the majority of the game we executed well and had very good pace," Carr explained. "It led to some good shots and we had a nice look in our eye today."

Ian Harward came off the bench with 12 points to pace five Seasiders in double-figures.

Point Loma overcame a 39-25 disadvantage on the boards by outscoring BYU-Hawaii by 21 points from behind the 3-point line.

"I have a ton of respect from that group from Hawaii," added Carr. "They have good players, a great coach and are an excellent team. For us to get that win means a lot to our program."

Point Loma will return to the court next Friday (Feb. 20) to face non-conference opponent St. Katherine at 7:00 p.m. PLNU will then host Norte Dame de Namur on Senior Night (Feb. 26).
