PLNU defeats PacWest rival Holy Names, 7-2

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's tennis team won its second straight match in as many days against a Pacific West Conference foe with a convincing 7-2 victory over Holy Names on Saturday, Feb. 28.

James Tenbroeck and Grant Alston picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give PLNU (4-4) the early 1-0 lead; a lead the Sea Lions would never give back all day. The closest the Hawks came was when they took the match at No. 2 doubles 8-6 to even the match at 1-1. Andre Staab and Daniel Milliken fought hard to make sure Point Loma would not lose the lead as the duo battled back to win 9-7 on court 1 to give PLNU the crucial lead going into singles.

"We've done a great job of transitioning from doubles to singles, and trying to get the lead early in singles to gain that momentum," said Point Loma head coach Curt Wheeler. "When we do that everyone responds and we are able to finish those matches off."

Just like coach Wheeler said, when the Sea Lions saw their opportunity to close the match quickly, they went for the kill.

Andre Staab, Jack Alston, CJ Erion and Tenbroeck each won in straight sets to pick up the necessary team points and give Point Loma the match victory. Martin Blaho won on court 2 in three sets to complete the scoring for PLNU.

"The guys did a great job today of focusing on what they needed to focus on and executing," Wheeler added. "In tennis like any other sport you have an advantage being at home with the surface and the environment. The great thing is we will be tested when we head to their place in one week and have to play in their environment.

"When you have a decisive win you have a lot of guys to highlight but James Tenbroeck stood out today," said Wheeler. "He did a great job of leading he and Grant (Alston) in No. 3 doubles, and then he took care of business a little quicker than he has been in singles. He got the lead early and closed it out. He did a great job today."

Point Loma will complete its five-match home stand on Tuesday, Mar. 3 against Concordia (CA) at 4:00 p.m.
"We have a tough Concordia coming in next Tuesday and that will be a good test for us," Wheeler added.
