PacWest Tournament Preview: #3 PLNU vs. #6 BYUH

THE PACWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS:
For the first time in school history, and in their first year of eligibility, the Point Loma women's basketball team is in the hunt to go to the NCAA playoffs. The Sea Lions finished the regular season at 18-10, and 15-5 in the PacWest to capture the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Sea Lions have won four straight games, and 14 of their last 16, to enter the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the PacWest. They will face No. 6 seeded BYU-Hawaii (15-11) in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday, Mar. 5 at 11:30 a.m.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
The Sea Lions, who were ranked No. 9 in the latest NCAA West Region poll, found their rhythm in the second half of the season to win 14 of their final 16 games and finish third in the PacWest (the team's best-ever finish in the conference). The Sea Lions are led by first team All-PacWest selection Jessica Escorza. She is sixth in the PacWest in scoring (15.4 ppg), while leading PLNU in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and free throws. Roya Rustamzada, picked up conference Freshman of the Year and third team All-PacWest honors. She averaged 8.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, including 10.6 ppg, 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a starter.  
 
As a team, PLNU lead the PacWest in scoring defense, allowing just 61.4 points per game. That average led the league by 3.5 points per game. The Sea Lions also lead the league in field goal percentage defense (.364) and free throw percentage (.754). Point Loma ranked fourth in field goal percentage (.406) and second in turnover margin (3.57).
 
FIRST ROUND MATCHUP - BYU-Hawaii:
The Seasiders grabbed the No. 6 seed in the tournament after going 15-11 during the season, and 12-8 in PacWest play. It was an 11-game turnaround from the 2013-14 season for BYU-Hawaii, which won just four games last year. The Seasiders are led by second team All-PacWest selection Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo and third team selection Celeste Claw. Taputu-Leopoldo finished fourth in the PacWest in scoring with 16.1 ppg. Claw averaged 12.8 ppg and led the PacWest with a .419 3-point shooting percentage.
 
Last meeting: PLNU defeated BYU-Hawaii 73-55 on Feb. 14 in Golden Gym in the only meeting of the season between the teams. Riley Abraham recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Escorza scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. PLNU forced BYU-Hawaii in to 26 turnovers and outscored them 40-10 on points in the paint.
