Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Valuing the rock; PLNU has just 9 TOs in win at FPU

FRESNO, Calif. - Four Sea Lions scored in double-figures, led by 15 points off the bench from Amy Ogren, to defeat Fresno Pacific, 72-60, on Saturday, Jan. 23.

This was the fifth straight victory for the Point Loma women's basketball team, which improved to 13-5 on the season and to 7-4 in the PacWest. The loss drops FPU to 2-15, and to 0-11 in the PacWest.

Amy Ogren scored 13 of her career-high 15 points after halftime to help PLNU escape with the win. She was 5-of-7 in the second half and 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point range. She also had two assists and a steal.

"AO (Ogren) came in and sparked us," said PLNU assistant coach Dwayne Cosby. "Her game has developed so much from last year, and now she's one of the conference's legitimate dual threat scorers. She's no longer just an athletic driver; she's shooting the "3-ball" at an amazing clip right now. Combine that with Anna (Viettry) being aggressive and scoring, we are hitting on all cylinders at the right time of year."

Alex Brunk had 12 points to go along with six rebounds, and she matched career-highs with six assists and six steals. Roya Rustamzada once again filled the stat sheet by posting 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. Madison West added 12 points and Anna Viettry chipped in with nine.

"When Alex and Roya start flirting with triple-doubles that usually results in a 'W' for us," Cosby added.

Taylor Caspers and Hannah Ramirez each had 14 points for the Sunbirds which used a 44-30 rebounding advantage to stay in the game.

Point Loma had its lowest turnover rate of the season with nine. Meanwhile, they forced FPU into 24 turnovers which the Sea Lions turned into 30 points, and a 17-2 edge in fast break points.

"We put a premium on defense and we got rewarded with some much needed offense," Cosby said. "This is the most points we scored in transition all year."

PLNU trailed 14-9 after a poor first quarter. They outscored FPU 24-8 in the second quarter to take a 33-22 lead into halftime, and they would never surrender the lead.

"It's always good to get a win on the road especially at Fresno Pacific," said Cosby. "This is a difficult place for us to play and it showed today with our worst start to a game since Cal Baptist last year in Alaska.

The Sea Lions' next game will be next Saturday, Jan. 30, at Golden Gym when they host BYU-Hawaii starting at 2:00 p.m. It will also be Military Night at PLNU so check plnusealions.com/promos for more information.
