SAN DIEGO -
Abbey Teagle,
Cori Deason and
Jennifer Ballez each scored and the Point Loma women's soccer team extended its shutout streak to four straight in a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Â
The victory keeps the Sea Lions (6-2-3, 4-1-1 PacWest) tied atop the PacWest standings with Azusa Pacific. Both team have 13 points through six contests. PLNU has won three straight matches, and is undefeated in its last five contests. The loss sends NDNU below .500 on the year at 4-5-2 and to 2-3-1 in the PacWest.
Â
Teagle gave Point Loma the lead in the 30th minute on her second goal in as many matches. She followed
Rachel Witz on a breakaway for a 3v1 with the keeper. Witz took the first shot and it ricocheted off the keeper to Teagle for the put back score and the first-half lead for the Sea Lions.
Â
Deason followed up less than 10 minutes later (40') with her PacWest-leading seventh goal of the season. Teagle was the point-person on this score. She made a great play by controlling the ball on the baseline and dishing it to a wide open Deason in the middle of the box. Deason took a touch and lined up a strike into the net. It gave PLNU the 2-0 at the half.
Â
"Cori is having a great year," said Point Loma head coach
Tim Hall. "She is composed, she is not panicking and she is playing great soccer. When you a player like her up top which can put some balls in the net that brings tremendous confidence to our team because they know she can score. Not only is she a physical element for our team, but she is helping us a lot psychologically."
Â
Jennifer Ballez would get in on the scoring in the 58th minute to basically seal the match for the Sea Lions with the way the defense was playing. Ballez received a long pass from
Keagan Bolibol along the outside and she got past the defenders for a 1v1 with the keeper which she calmly deposited for her first goal of the season.
Â
The defense had one of its better matches of the season in helping Point Loma post its fourth straight shutout, and seventh of the season.
Ariel Oriarte made three saves in the win. Point Loma has now gone 428 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
Â
"We are avid about being good on defense," explained coach Hall. "I am very proud of our defensive unit. They have been fantastic. From our highest player to Ariel in the back, everyone is playing well on defense. The team as a unit is committed to trying to shut other teams down, and I am proud of them for that."
Â
Point Loma will be back in action next week to close out its 2016 home schedule. The Sea Lions will host Holy Names on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 3:30 p.m., and Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
Â
"I told the team we have one match on Thursday and that is all we know," said Hall "We have Holy Names on Thursday and we need to get three points, period."Â
