Volleyball battles but falls to PacWest leaders

SAN DIEGO - It was a wonderful Senior Night for a pair of Sea Lions that were in their final match at Golden Gym; all except the final score. The Point Loma volleyball team battled PacWest-leader Concordia tough throughout the match, but the Eagles prevailed with the 25-13, 23-25, 26-24 and 25-17 victory. (Nov. 16)

The win clinched the 2016 PacWest Championship for Concordia (26-2, 17-2 PacWest). Unfortunately for the Eagles they will not be eligible for the postseason until 2017 as they are transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II. The loss drops PLNU back below .500 in the PacWest standings (9-10) but they remain in eighth place.

After a slow start, Point Loma found some rhythm in the second set and came back from a 23-19 deficit with six-straight points to win the second set 25-23 and tie up the match at 1-1. PLNU took that momentum into the third set and nearly pulled that one out after both teams were tied at 24-24. Concordia kept it up in the fourth set and won 25-17 to finish the match.

Brianna Sizemore paced Point Loma with 16 kills. She added 11 digs for her 13th double-double. Cara Keturakis also posted a double-double with 34 assists and 17 digs. She was three kills short of posting her second triple-double of the season. Christin Fisher continues to inch closer to the school's single-season record for digs. The senior from Murrieta, Calif., registered 32 digs in the match to close within 35 of setting a new school record, with one match to play. Samantha Krakower added 10 kills and a team-leading .292 hitting percentage.

Rachel Flynn led the Eagles with 24 kills. She was one of three student-athletes from CUI to post double-figures in kills. As a team, Concordia outhit PLNU .233 to .133.

"Concordia is a very good team and they are very well coached," said Point Loma head coach Jonathan Scott. "They have very few weaknesses so we knew we had to bring it. With the new lineup we've been playing it was really fun to see our women buy-in and battle at that level."

Despite the loss, the Sea Lions put on a good show for their home crowd and the family of seniors, Marissa Hageman and Christin Fisher. Coach Scott is very sad to see both ladies in their final home match.

"It took Marissa a little while to really make her stamp on this program, but once she did, she did it in a big way," said Scott. "Especially in these last few matches we've asked so much from her that most players can't do, and she has been willing and able to do anything for this team."

"Christin has been hands down the best backcourt player I've ever had the pleasure of coaching," Scott explained. "It has been a lot of fun and I am really excited to see her move forward."

Fisher will try to break the school's single-season dig record in the Sea Lions' final match of the year on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11:00 a.m., on the road against Dixie State.

"I just want these women to have the mindset of growth even at the end of the year," Scott explained. "That is the real goal for our team. The result may or may not take care of itself, but if we have the right mindset, we can get better."
