CARSON, Calif. -
Roya Rustamzada recorded her third double-double of the young season, but it was not enough to allow the Point Loma women's basketball team to overcome an offshooting night as it suffered its first loss of the year to Cal State LA, 48-44, in the PacWest/CCAA Thanksgiving Classic.
Â
This was the second straight year Cal State LA (3-2) has given PLNU (4-1) its first loss. Both came in the PacWest/CCAA Thanksgiving Classic.
Â
The Sea Lions just never got the offense going against a stout Golden Eagles' defense. PLNU came into the contest averaging 71.5 points, but tonight were held to 27 percent shooting, including 4-of-22 from 3-point range.
Â
Roya Rustamzada had 10 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and three steals to fill up the stat sheet for PLNU. With her third double-double, Rustamzada is just one short of matching her output from last season.
Kassidy Gengenbacher came off the bench to lead PLNU with 12 points. She has scored in double-figures in each of her last four games.
Alex Brunk added 11 points, eight rebounds, a block and four steals.
Â
Rikke Fabricius had 14 points and seven rebounds to pace the Golden Eagles. She also went 6-of-6 from the free throw line. That effort proved critical in the end as Cal State LA went 12-of-14 at the line, to outscore PLNU by eight from there in a four-point game.
Â
The Sea Lions will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 26) against tournament host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.Â
