AZUSA, Calif. -
Vince Boumann scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to power the Point Loma men's basketball team past coach
Ryan Looney's former team, Seattle Pacific, 86-79 at the APU Cougar Classic on Saturday, Nov. 26.
Â
The win evens the Sea Lions record at 3-3 and drops the Falcons to the same record.
Â
Boumann shot 9-of-12 from the field, including 8-of-10 in the first half, en route to his second double-double of the season. He posted 18 of his points in the first half as PLNU built a 44-35 halftime lead.
Â
Point Loma would go up as many as 18 points in the second half (65-47) before SPU whittled it down to four points with 1:16 on the clock. A huge offensive rebound by
Mike Planeta and
Josh Rodriguez going 5-of-6 at the line in the final minute sealed the victory for the Sea Lions.
Â
Rodriguez hit double-figures for the sixth time this season with 17 points. He had three steals and dished out four assists while shooting 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Planeta and
Tanner Lancona also hit double-figures with 11 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Tony Miller led four Falcons in double-figures with 20 points. He also added 11 boards to complete the double-double.
Looney was the head coach at Seattle Pacific the last seven seasons before joining PLNU prior to the 2016-17 campaign. He took SPU to the NCAA West Regional in each season of his tenure.Â
Â
Point Loma will now prepare for the start of PacWest play on Dec. 1. The Sea Lions will open the conference season at home against PacWest preseason favorite California Baptist. The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. It will also feature Military Night and the #BeatCBU promotions.Â
