Clean sweep: Sea Lions take down ARTU in three

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team earned its second home sweep of the season with a 28-26, 25-22 and 25-20 victory over Academy of Art on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The win allows Point Loma to improve to 9-15 on the season and to 7-8 in the PacWest. The loss drops ART to 6-18 (4-11 PacWest).

The match was much closer than the sweep would indicate as evident by its 12 lead changes and 26 ties in just the three sets. However, Point Loma proved to be the better team thanks to its ability to finish. The Sea Lions won the first set in extra points after being tied at 24-24 and even trailing at 26-25. Then in the second set, the two teams were tied at 20-20 before the Sea Lions rattled off four straight points to seize control of the set. PLNU had a bit of a cushion late in the third set but ARTU brought the match back to within three points at 23-20, and the Sea Lions had to post back-to-back points to complete the sweep.

"That was a very tight match in almost every category," said Point Loma head coach Jonathan Scott. "ARTU does a very nice job serving and blocking to put a lot of pressure on their opponents. I was proud of the way we were able to play with composure through that pressure and was able to go out and win those last two sets."

Point Loma hit .248 in the match, its best mark since its previous home sweep. The Sea Lions hit at least .222 in each set with a minimum of 14 kills. Brianna Sizemore led all student-athletes with 13 kills. Cara Keturakis continued to fill up the box score with 27 assists, nine kills, seven digs and three blocks.

"Looking at the stats I almost have the feeling that I wish it would have gone four sets so she could have got another triple-double," said Scott. "It is very impressive that she has already done that this season, and she would have done it again if the match went four sets.

"When we pass well we are at a big advantage, and most of that is because of Cara," added Scott.

Point Loma will have short turnaround to its next contest as it hosts California Baptist, who is second in the PacWest standings, on Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.

"I thought we played CBU okay last time," Scott said. "They were the better team and came out the victor, but that is a match we have repeatedly called back upon. Although we played okay we didn't play with the right type of emotion so we are excited to see how we can be our normal selves on Monday."
