PLNU jumps back into PacWest play against HNU, DSU

This week
Coming off a week of finals, the Point Loma women's basketball team will play two PacWest Conference opponents before taking a break for Christmas. The Sea Lions will host Holy Names on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m., before traveling to the desert to face Dixie State on Monday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. (PST).

A look at the Sea Lions
PLNU is 7-2 on the season and 2-1 in the PacWest. Alex Brunk is leading five Sea Lions in double-figures with 14.2 points per game. She is shooting .516 percent from the field to rank third in the PacWest. She is also hauling in 6.9 rebounds. Roya Rustamzada is pacing the PacWest in double-doubles with five on the season. She is averaging 9.1 rebounds to go along with 11.7 ppg. Kassidy Gengenbacher has provided a spark off the bench with 12.7 ppg and scoring double-figures in eight straight games. Sydney Tonack chips in with 11.7 ppg and 3.9 rebounds. Madison West, who has already matched the school-record for career 3-pointers, is averaging 11.3 ppg and is fourth in the PacWest with a .435 3-point shooting percentage. Anna Viettry leads the team with 4.2 assists per game.
 
As a team, Point Loma is scoring its opponents by exactly 10 ppg. The Sea Lions average 70.44 ppg and shoot .447 percent from the field, while holding their opponents to 60.44 ppg and a .373 shooting mark. PLNU is also winning the battle of the boards by plus-2.3 per game.
 
Ranked in regional coaches' poll
The Point Loma women's basketball team stayed at No. 7 in the latest D2SIDA media poll, which was released on Dec. 12. PLNU earned 23 points in the poll. To view the complete weekly region poll, click here.
 
A look at the Hawks
Holy Names is 1-8 on the season and 1-2 in the PacWest. Their conference win came over BYU-Hawaii (58-49). Jeana Magna is leading the team with 10.9 ppg. She is shooting .392 percent from the field and .308 from 3-point range. Tatiana Howard is second in the PacWest with 10.4 rebounds per game. She is also averaging 8.7 points and is shooting .514 from the field. As a team, HNU is putting up 60.2 ppg, while allowing 69.9 ppg.
 
A look at the Trailblazers
Dixie State is still looking for its first win of the season. The Trailblazers have started the year off at 0-9 and PacWest play at 0-3. Matti Ventling and Tramina Jordan are pacing the team in scoring with 10.1 and 10.2 ppg, respectively. Lisa VanCampen is leading the team with 7.9 rebounds per game. As a team, Dixie State is averaging 57.3 ppg and allowing 76.9 ppg. The Achilles Heel of the Trailblazers all season has been the turnover. They are averaging 21.9 turnovers per game and forcing just 12.4.
 
Next games
Point Loma will be on Christmas break next week before resuming play on Dec. 29 with a non-conference game against crosstown opponent San Diego Christian at 5:30 p.m. The Sea Lions will jump back into PacWest play on Jan. 3 in a contest at Holy Names.
