Women's Basketball

PacWest play continues at Concordia this Saturday

This week
PacWest play will continue for the Point Loma women's basketball team this week when it heads to Irvine, Calif., to face the Concordia (CA) Eagles on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m. Concordia is currently 2-1 in the PacWest and PLNU is 1-1.

A look at the Sea Lions
Point Loma is 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions opened PacWest play last week with a loss against No. 10 California Baptist, before bouncing back with a road victory over Fresno Pacific (76-57).
 
Alex Brunk leads five Sea Lions averaging over 11.6 points per game with 14.0 ppg. She is shooting .488 percent from the field (fourth in the PacWest) and is also averaging 6.5 rebounds. Roya Rustamzada is nearly averaging a double-double with 11.6 points and 9.5 rebounds. She has also recorded a career-best five double-double in the first eight games of the season. She is fifth in the PacWest with 9.5 rpg. Kassidy Gengenbacher has come off the bench to rank second on the Sea Lions with 12.5 ppg. She is leading the team with a .507 field goal percentage and an .800 free throw percentage. Sydney Tonack has increased her scoring average each of the past three seasons to her current career-high of 11.8 ppg. She has turned the ball over just eight times in eight games, while handing out 11 assists and recording eight blocks. Madison West is shooting .472 from the field and is averaging 11.6 ppg. She is four 3-pointers short of breaking the school's career mark. Her .425 shooting percentage from 3-point range is second in the league. Anna Viettry is pacing the squad with 3.3 assists per game.
 
As a team, PLNU is leading the PacWest in a variety of defensive categories. The Sea Lions' .366 field goal percentage defense paces the league along giving up just 59.8 points per game. This has allowed PLNU to outscoring its opponents by nearly 10 points per game (9.6). The Sea Lions also rank fourth in the league in rebounding margin (+0.9) and are second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.05).
 
Ranked in regional coaches' poll
The Point Loma women's basketball team climbed up to No. 7 in the latest D2SIDA Division II media poll, which was released on Dec. 5. PLNU earned 24 points in the poll to rise up one spot from last week.  To view the complete weekly region poll click here.
 
A look at the Eagles
Concordia is 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in the PacWest. After dropping their first two games of the season, CUI has bounced back to win five of its next six. Sopavy Seng is the only Eagle in double-figures. She is averaging 10.0 ppg. However, seven Eagles average 7.0 or more points per game. Gaby Johnson is averaging 9.9 ppg to go along with 7.6 rebounds. Ugochi Anudokem is averaging 8.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
 
As a team, Concordia is outscoring its opponents by 8.4 ppg and are outrebounding them by 3.5 rebounds. The Eagles are also shooting .426 percent from the field and holding its opponents to a .380 mark.
 
Next games
Point Loma will come back home to face Antelope Valley in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:00 p.m. The Sea Lions will then jump back into PacWest play with a pair of contests before the break. PLNU will host Holy Names on Saturday, Dec. 17, before traveling to St. George, Utah to face Dixie State on Monday, Dec. 19.
