Women's Basketball

Critical stretch for PLNU; Westphal watch at 594

This week
Things don't get any easier for the Point Loma women's basketball team this week as it continues its toughest five-game stretch of the season in which their opponents have a combined .777 winning percentage. PLNU will welcome in Dominican (CA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., before travelling to Azusa Pacific on Saturday (Feb. 13) and then hosting Academy of Art on Monday.

Westphal watch
Point Loma head women's basketball coach Bill Westphal sits at 594 career victories. He has already announced his retirement for the end of the season so there is a bit of a race to see if he will reach the 600 victory milestone. PLNU has seven regular season games left, in addition to any postseason opportunities to try and get coach Westphal that monumental win.
 
A look at the Sea Lions
Point Loma has won eight straight games to improve to 16-5 on the season, and move into fifth in the PacWest Conference standings with a 9-4 record. Madison West leads PLNU and ranks seventh in the PacWest with 16.0 points per game. She is fourth in the league in 3-point percentage (.407) and eighth in overall field goal percentage (.442). Alex Brunk is third in the PacWest with 2.5 steals per game. She also ranks 14th in scoring (14.3) and eighth in rebounding (8.4). Roya Rustamzada ranks 10th in the PacWest with 3.3 assists per game. She is averaging 13.1 points and 7.7 rebounds. As a team, PLNU averages 68.7 points per game and shoots .423 percent from the field. Point Loma leads the PacWest in fewest turnovers and fewest fouls per game. PLNU also sits second in free throw percentage and 3-point defense.
 
A look at the Penguins
Dominican is 15-6 this season and fourth in the PacWest with an 11-3 record. The Penguins have won three straight games and seven of their last eight. DUC has gone 9-1 at home this season, but just 5-4 on the road. Allyssa Weatherd leads the team and ranks fourth in the PacWest in scoring with 18.6 points per game. She is shooting .593 percent from the field, and is also averaging 7.5 rebounds. Sandra Ikeora give the penguins another inside presence. She is averaging 15.3 points and leads the team with 15.3 ppg. Taylor Donnot (10.2 ppg) is also averaging double-figures. As a team, DUC ranks second in the PacWest in scoring with 82.5 ppg.
 
A look at the Cougars
Azusa Pacific is in a three-way tie for first place in the PacWest standings with a 13-1 record (19-3 overall). The Cougars have won seven straight games and are 12-1 at home this season. PLNU was on a four-game regular season winning streak against the Cougars before dropping its PacWest opener to APU on Dec. 3. Kelly Hardeman is pacing Azusa Pacific and ranked sixth in the PacWest with 17.2 points per game. She is also posting 9.8 rebounds, to fall just short of averaging a double-double. Cyndie Jones (12.3), Miriam Zabinsky (10.5) and Allison Greene (10.1) are also averaging double-figures for the Cougars. As a team, APU is fourth in the PacWest in scoring (79.5 ppg) and third in field goal percentage (.437).
 
A look at the Urban Knights
Academy of Art is another team tied atop the PacWest standings with a 13-1 record (18-6 overall). The Urban Knights opened the PacWest season with 10 straight victories before finally falling to Azusa Pacific on Jan. 23. ARTU is 7-2 on the road this season and is third in the PacWest in scoring (79.5 ppg). Jasmin Guinn leads the team, and sits high in the PacWest in a multitude of categories. She is second in scoring (19.4 ppg), 10th in rebounding (8.2) and ninth in field goal percentage (.439). She also paces the country with 3.8 steals per game.
 
Next week
Point Loma will close out its home schedule when it hosts California Baptist on Friday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. This will also be Senior Day for PLNU's lone senior, Jordan Ligons.
