Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Four in double-figures as PLNU topples ARTU

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team executed its game plan to perfection in a 78-70 victory over Academy of Art.

The victory evened the Sea Lions' PacWest record at 8-8 and moved them to 13-10 on the season. The loss dropped ART to 5-18 this year (3-14 PacWest).

PLNU got everything they needed on their script to defeat the Urban Knights. Point Loma scored first in the game and never relinquished the lead. In addition, the Sea Lions had four student-athletes score in double-figures, led by 20 from Mike Planeta. PLNU also won the rebounding battle (34-29) and made twice as many free throws as Academy of Art attempted (25-13).

"I am proud of our guys with their third game in five days," said Point Loma head coach Bill Carr. "After an emotional game on Saturday, I am proud the way they came back tonight and got the job done.

"The seven guys that are playing are doing a very good job of defending and then controlling it on the offensive end," added Carr.

Planeta was joined in double-figures by Jack Langborg (17), Josh Rodriguez (15) and Zach Burnham (12). Planeta was 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 on free throws. This is the third time this season the junior has reached the 20-point plateau. Langborg led the Sea Lions with five 3-pointers en route to matching his career-high of 17 points. He and Planeta combined to hit nine of the Sea Lions' 11 treys.

Rodriguez had seven assists to go along with his 15 points. He scored eight of those 15 points from the free throw line as PLNU outscored ARTU by 16 points from the charity stripe (and by 12 from long range). Tanner Lancona also came off the bench to notch seven points and lead PLNU with nine rebounds.

Chris Salas paced ART with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting off the bench. He was one of four Urban Knights in double-figures. ARTU was able to keep pace with PLNU thanks to a 38-18 edge on points in the paint.

The Sea Lions will now prepare to host California Baptist on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. It will also be Senior Night for the Sea Lions.

"We do need a little rest," said Carr. "We have a really good team coming in on Friday, but we will get back to practice and try to figure it out."
