SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team ran into a tough Hawaii Pacific team on Thursday and the Sea Lions were overcome by the Sharks' size, falling to HPU 81-58. (Feb. 25).
Tanner Lancona had a big game for Point Loma (13-13, 8-11 PacWest) off the bench with 17 points and seven rebouds. He hit all three of his 3-point attempts and finished 5-of-7 from the field.
Mike Planeta and
Chad Watkins also reached double-figures with 10 points apiece. Planeta added three steals.
Colfax Nordquist led four Sharks (18-8, 13-6 PacWest) in double-figures with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting. HPU had a 36-20 rebounding edge, including 14-4 on the offensive glass. This helped Hawaii Pacific outscore PLNU 14-2 on second chance points.
Things were good early for Point Loma as it jumped on top 30-23 early by making five of their first six 3-point attempts. HPU would close the first half on a 14-2 run to lead 40-32 at the half. The Sharks extended their lead to double-figures with a 12-4 run early in the second half, and PLNU was never able to get the lead back in single-digits.
Point Loma will close the Hawaii road trip and its regular season on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Chaminade. The game will tip at 9:30 p.m. (PST).
