Baseball splits PacWest doubleheader at Concordia

IRVINE, Calif. - After 13 days without games the Point Loma baseball team returned to the diamond and split a PacWest doubleheader on the road against Concordia (CA). PLNU dropped the opener 2-0 before winning the late game 5-3.

The Sea Lions are now 16-6 on the season and 5-3 in the PacWest. Concordia is 17-17 overall and 13-9 in the PacWest.

Game 1
It was a pitchers' duel in the opener as Point Loma's Kellen Sheppard and Concordia's Isaiah Terrazas locked into one of the best pitched games in the PacWest this season.

Sheppard (4-2) went seven innings allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four and walking just one. However, he was bested by the Eagles' righty. Terrazas (4-1) threw a four-hit shutout giving up just four hits and no walks while striking out three. He recorded 16 of his 27 outs on groundballs.

"Terrazzas was down all game, got ahead in the count and mixed his pitches well," said Point Loma head coach Joe Schaefer. "That was the first time we've seen someone like that this year and we didn't make the adjustments against a craft guy."

The Eagles got on the board first with a run in the third. Spencer Nielsen doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score on a groundout to third. Nielsen added an insurance run for CUI in the seventh on a solo home run. He had the only two extra base hits of the game.

Four Sea Lions had a hit apiece for PLNU. Matt Jervis and Ryan Garcia added stolen bases.

Game 2
Mike Gordner and Joseph Keller hit back-to-back home runs and Trevor Abshire allowed only one run in six innings to lead the Sea Lions to a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Gordner led off the second with a solo shot down the right field line and Keller followed with an opposite field homer in the same area. They added one more in the inning on an RBI-single by AJ Derr to drive in Derek Rustich before tacking on two more in the third on a run-scoring single by Colby Kaneshiro and a sacrifice fly by Keller.

"Those first runs gave us a spark after getting nothing in that first game," said Schaefer.

Abshire (2-1) pitched through the sixth inning allowing only four hits and one run to hand over a 5-1 lead to the bullpen. Patrick McMullen threw a scoreless seventh and Nathan Bennett allowed just an earned run in the eighth. Concordia made things interesting with two runs in the ninth but Coleman Huntley III held on for his fifth save of the season.

"Abshire was not sharp but he competed very well," explained Schaefer. "He kept them off-balance all game and the bullpen was great. We did enough early offensively and were able to hold on."

AJ Derr had three hits to lead Point Loma. Joseph Keller was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and a run scored. Gordner and Colby Kaneshiro also recorded multi-hit games. Brett Barker paced Concordia by going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and run scored.
