Sea Lions' home winning streak snapped by Eagles

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma baseball team had its nine-game home winning streak snapped on Friday as the Concordia Eagles came into Carroll B Land Stadium and took both games of the PacWest doubleheader. The Eagles won the opener, 9-0, and the nightcap in extra innings, 8-5 (Mar. 25).

Concordia improved to 19-17 on the year and 15-9 in the PacWest. Point Loma is now 16-8 on the season and 5-5 in the PacWest.

Game 1
Brett Barker pitched eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out eight to lead Concordia to a 9-0 win in the opener.

Barker (3-2) took 124 pitches to get through eight innings but he managed to keep the Sea Lions' hitters off-balance all game as evidence by just one PLNU runner reaching third. Dallas Draviczki wrapped up the shutout with a perfect ninth. It was just the third time PLNU has been shutout this season.

Spencer Nielsen continued his strong series by going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tino Leite also collected three hits for the Eagles as they outhit PLNU 14-4. Devin Carter had two of the Sea Lions' four hits.

Eric Pierce (2-2) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) and 11 hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Game 2
The PLNU offense came from behind to tie the game or take the lead three different times, but they couldn't hold the lead long enough for the victory as Concordia won the nightcap 8-5.

PLNU scored three in the third on a two-run double by AJ Derr and a sacrifice fly by Devin Carter to a 3-2 lead, its first of the day. After Concordia tied the game in on an RBI-single by Spencer Nielsen in the top of the fifth, Ryan Garcia put PLNU back in front in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to right, his seventh of the season.

Concordia added single runs in the six and the seventh to hold a 5-4 going to the seventh inning in this shortened game. Point Loma battled back for a single run in the seventh to send the game to extras. AJ Derr singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by Matt Jervis to bring the Sea Lions' RBI-leader, Ryan Garcia, to the plate. The junior first baseman delivered with a single through the right side to score Derr from second and the game to extra innings tied at 5-5.

After a scoreless eighth for both teams, Concordia broke open the game with three, two-out runs in the ninth.

Nick Boyett (5-2) earned the victory in relief for the Eagles as he went three innings allowing just one run and three hits. Coleman Huntley III (0-2) took the loss.

Garcia was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored for the Sea Lions. Leadoff hitter AJ Derr went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
