SURPRISE, Ariz. - The No. 29 ranked Point Loma men's tennis team made short work of No. 32 Holy Names on Saturday (Apr. 16) to claim the PacWest consolation title, 5-1.
Â
For the third time at the PacWest Championships, PLNU grabbed the match lead after doubles. The teams split on courts 2 and 3, bringing it down to court 1 for that elusive advantage going into doubles. Point Loma's No. 15 nationally ranked doubles team of
Daniel Milliken and
Andre Staab got everything they could handle from the Vulcans' Hugo Colpart and Matthew Halligan, but the PLNU senior duo found a way to close out 9-7 and avoid a tiebreaker situation.
Â
That point not only gave Point Loma the lead, it also built their confidence and an extra pep in their step.
CJ Erion swept his opponent at No. 5 singles, 6-2 and 6-2 to put Point Loma up 3-1.
Andre Staab added another point on court 1 as he recorded a 6-3 and 6-2 straight set victory.
Adrian von Braun captured the decisive match point for the Sea Lions on court 6 with a 6-2 and 6-1 decision.
Â
PLNU completes its season at 12-13 and Holy Names finishes at 11-11.
