SAN DIEGO - For the second straight season the Point Loma men's soccer team opened the year with a shutout victory against one of the west region's top teams, Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0. (Sept. 1)
Once again it was
Eduardo Gallardo that got the Sea Lions' offense going. He scored the matches' first goal just two minutes into the second half. He scored thanks to some quick thinking by
Patrice Glaser who immediately poked a free kick to an open Gallardo for the goal.
"That was all Patrice," said coach
Phil Wolf. "It was a smart play and he caught them unaware."
Navarro added an insurance goal in the 81st minute, the first goal of his career.
"I told him he'd get one chance to put the game away but he tucked it really well," said Wolf. "He is going to play a big role for us this year."
Michael Lambert earned the shutout while making six saves.
"That was most a keeper has ever had to do for one of my teams. He was engaged the entire match."
Last season, PLNU defeated CSUDH 3-0 at their place to start the season. The Toros went on to win the CCAA regular season title and reach the NCAA West Regional.
"This was really good start to the season," added Wolf. "Cal State Dominguez Hills are going to win a lot of matches this season."
Point Loma will face another CCAA opponent when it travels to Cal State LA for a match on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
"We have to move this one right behind us and look towards Cal State LA on Saturday," Wolf explained. "That is going to be a really tough game."
