POMONA, Calif. -
Cori Deason scored in the 81st minute to complete the Sea Lions' 2-1 comeback victory on the road at Cal Poly Pomona in the season opener. (Sept. 1)
Deason was tenacious on the game-winning goal. It became with her receiving a long pass from sophomore
Madelon Denbaugh and leading an attack into the box. Her first attempt was squarely blocked by the goalie but Deason stayed with her shot and knocked the rebound into the net for the go-ahead goal.
The senior forward also assisted on Point Loma's first goal when she found
Easton Kawawaki for the equalizing goal just three minutes into the second half. Kawawaki made a great turn in the left side of the box and fired a low shot into the far corner of the net for the Sea Lions' first goal of 2016.
Cal Poly Pomona's lone goal came just three minutes before the half. A miscue by the Sea Lions in the midfield led to a run for the Broncos. Lauren Miller took a chance from long range and nailed the perfect shot which snuck in the goal right under the crossbar to give CPP the 1-0 lead at the half.
That was about the only blemish for the PLNU defense as it was the only shot on goal all night by the Broncos. Deason herself had four shots on goal.
Point Loma's next match will be Saturday, Sept. 3 at Cal State San Marcos. The match will kickoff at 3:00 p.m.
