SAN DIEGO -
Madison Valenzuela scored two goals and dished out an assist to highlight a complete team effort for the Point Loma women's soccer team on the pitch on Saturday as it shutout Southern Nazarene, 5-0. (Sept. 10).
The Sea Lions improved to 2-1-1 on the season, while SNU dropped to 0-3-0.
Valenzuela was involved on each of the Sea Lions' three first-half goals. She assisted on the first one to
Cori Deason who first a beautiful shot over the goal keeper from 28 yards out on a Sea Lions' fast break in the 13th minute. Valenzuela then posted her first career goal on another deep shot as
Bella Diaz found her open in the middle of the field above the box. She recorded her second goal of the half on a penalty kick after
Abbey Teagle was dragged down in the box in the 44th minute.
"(Valenzula) is getting back into soccer," Point Loma head coach
Tim Hall explained. "She was out of the sport for a little while but now she is really starting to get the rust off of her and her fitness back. She is very good players and we think she is just going to get better and better. Today was a very positive day for her and us."
In the second half, Point Loma added two goals just two minutes apart to put the game away. Diaz got a goal of her own as she was in the perfect spot to put back in a rebound after a scrum inside the box.
Easton Kawawaki then recorded her second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
"We didn't know what to expect from SNU, and our girls came out and played at a good level to start off the match," said Hall. "The thing I was really proud of today was that when we were having our way (on the field) we maintained a good level. That was the most important thing for me today. They all worked very hard."
The Sea Lions maintained the clean sheet for its second shutout of the season.
Ariel Oriarte had to make only one save in the victory as SNU managed just two shots. Meanwhile, SNU's Natasha Fuentes made five saves but also let in five goals.
PLNU will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 13 when it travels to Cal State LA. The match will start at 6:00 p.m.
