LOS ANGELES - The Point Loma and Cal State LA women's soccer teams played to a 0-0 draw in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Â
The Sea Lions are now 2-1-2 this season, while the Golden Eagles land at 1-2-2.
Â
Point Loma outshot Cal State LA 14-8 (6-3 shots on goal), including 12-4 in the second half and overtime. Five of those shots in the second half were on-goal but the Golden Eagles' Adrianna Maldonado held strong and the Sea Lions were never able to get one past her.
Â
"We struggled in the first half to find our rhythm but the girls played much better in the second half," said Point Loma head coach
Tim Hall. "We had our chances but couldn't finish.
Â
"It was a very good game," he added. "It was a battle on both sides. Cal State LA came out very hungry."
Â
PLNU's
Ariel Oriarte was not tested as often but she made three saves to preserve the shutout for the Sea Lions, their third of the year.
Â
"Ariel came up big for us in net," said Hall. "She made some nice saves, including a really big one."
Â
Madison Valenzuela and
Cori Deason led Point Loma with four shots apiece. No one on CSULA had more than two shots.
Â
The Sea Lions will now take a bit of a competition hiatus before opening PacWest play next Thursday, Sept. 22 at California Baptist starting at 3 p.m.Â
