SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Cal State San Marcos, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 15-11, in a non-conference contest at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
Â
The Sea Lions are now 3-8 on the season (1-1 PacWest). The Cougars improved to 8-3 (1-1 CCAA) with the victory.
Â
Brianna Sizemore matched her career-high with 17 kills to pace the Sea Lions. She hit .250 and added 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Ashlynn Fresques also posted a double-double, her third of the season, with 12 kills and 13 digs.
Cara Keturakis led the team with 49 assists and
Christin Fisher added 14 digs.
Â
The Sea Lions also played very well at the net, outblocking CSUSM 13.0-4.0, marking the third straight match PLNU has won the battle at the net, and the second straight time they have registered double-figures in the category.
Â
"We've had blocking as a focus pretty consistently but it still comes and goes," said Point Loma head coach
Jonathan Scott. "This wasn't an atypical match (for us). We just have to find our constancy there."
Â
That lack of consistency cost Point Loma tonight. After hitting above .200 in sets 2-4, including a .289 mark in set 3, the Sea Lions registered just a .174 hitting percentage in the decisive fifth set, while CSUSM hit .346. PLNU also made 13 service errors compared to just five for the Cougars.
Â
"There is no moral victory in tonight's match," explained Scott. "I am very disappointed in our effort, our mindset and our competitiveness. This match was a step back. "
Â
Point Loma will now move back into conference play as it travels to Fresno Pacific to face the Sunbirds on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
Â
"We just have to get back into the gym. Our practices have all been spectacular this season. We are just excited that is match is followed by a day we get to practice."
