Sea Lions settle for tie with CUI under the lights

SAN DIEGO - After 110 minutes of play, the Point Loma women's soccer team and Concordia (CA) stood right where the night began as the two teams settled for a 0-0 tie in the Sea Lions' second annual Night Soccer Match on Thursday, Sept. 29.

The tie allows Concordia to remain undefeated this season at 5-0-2 (1-0-1 PacWest) while PLNU evens up its PacWest record at 1-1-1 (3-2-3 overall).

The Sea Lions had their chances to get the full result in the contest as they outshot the Eagles 22-12, including 8-4 on shots on goal, but they never found the nylon of the net. PLNU's best chance came in the 25th minute when Easton Kawawaki was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick. However, CUI's goalie Jasmin Alvarez read the shot perfectly and punched it harmlessly away from the goal. This just one of the set pieces the Sea Lions were unable to capitalize on in the match.

"I thought we played well but if you don't make penalty kicks or put corner kicks in front of the goal or take advantage of your set pieces you don't have a chance, and we give away too much on set pieces," explained Point Loma head coach Tim Hall. "It is very hard to plan on putting the ball in the net if you aren't taking advantage of those things.

"It was two very good teams going at it today," Hall added, "and you can't beat teams like Concordia when you have those opportunities and you don't capitalize."

Despite not scoring, the Sea Lions were still in the match thanks to their consistency on defense as they posted their fourth shutout in eight matches. Ariel Oriarte had four saves for PLNU, and Jazmin Alvarez added eight for the Eagles.

Those eight shots on goal tell the story of missed opportunities, which is how coach Hall felt after this match.

"I feel like we kind of gave this one away," he said. "This one does not feel good as a tie."

PLNU will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, Oct. 1 when it hosts Dominican (CA) at 2:00 p.m. This is the second of Point Loma's seven-match homestand.
