Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Goal Gallardo!

Sea Lions lose shutout streak but unbeaten streak continues

SAN DIEGO - Eduardo Gallardo soared above the scrum to head in the game-winning goal to lead the Point Loma men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory in double overtime against Hawaii Pacific on Monday, Oct. 16. The victory also expanded the team's unbeaten streak to a school-record 11 matches

Point Loma trailed 1-0 at the start of the second half after a goal by the Shark in the 49th minute. Indiana Fuller provided the equalizer in the 58th minute off a pass from Tim Siegfried after a rebound. Gallardo nearly won it for PLNU with nine minutes left in regulation but HPU's goalie Daniel Arnoll made a fantastic save on a header. Gallardo would not miss his chance later in the match.

As match turned to double overtime the Sea Lions made a great run down the sidelines and Mitch Wheelon worked the ball to Jacob Moreno on the endline. The freshman sent a soft cross in front of the net and Gallardo rose up to head the ball into the net for his eighth career game-winning goal.

PacWest Implications
Point Loma takes over first place in the PacWest Conference standings with 20 points. Hawaii Pacific drops into a tie for ninth with seven points.

The Turning Point
Gallardo's game-winner not only was the difference in the match but was a sigh of relief to coach Wolf and his coaching staff. The Sea Lions are in the hunt for the PacWest Championship, and even a tie is a point they cannot afford to drop.

Wolf's Words
On the comeback: "We were very fortunate to get that result. The guys kept going and kept finding ways to score goals but it was not a great performance and I thought HPU was pretty good."

On the game-winning goal: "Mitch Wheelon and Jacob Moreno have a really nice understanding. Moreno played the ball across the face of the goal and it was a great job by Eddie to get the ball."

On Gallardo: "He is our most dangerous player right now and it seems he always has a goal in him. We have to keep putting him at the '9' and let him find the goal."

On Dixie State match: "Every match is big but this is a really big match. We will be going into some tough circumstances at St. George but hopefully we will rest and heal up to be ready for Saturday."
