Not giving an inch: PLNU battles #9 CBU to a tie

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Battling 90-degree heat and the No. 9 team in the country, the Point Loma men's soccer team took a strategic approach and earned a 0-0 tie against California Baptist on the road on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Sea Lions, who were missing six starters, shutout the nation's No. 1 scoring team to extend their shutout streak to 614 consecutive minutes. This was the first time all season CBU had been held scoreless. PLNU is undefeated in its last eight matches.

PacWest Implications
The tie drops both teams in the PacWest standings as Concordia earned a victory to move into first place with 15 points. CBU is currently tied with Notre Dame de Namur for second place with 13 points. PLNU is in lone possession of fourth place with 11 points.

The Turning Point
Once the 90 minutes of regulation had concluded the match felt like it had swung in the Sea Lions' favor. PLNU's strategy worked as it held CBU scoreless for the first time all season.

Wolf's Words
On strategy of the match: "I don't know that we were playing them to tie, we were more trying to play them on the break to see if we could nick a goal. With all our injuries and our red cards, I just didn't think we could extend ourselves, especially with it being 90 degrees at game time."

On getting a result: "All things considered, with us missing four starters and two guys with red cards, I think a result is a very positive thing for us. I don't like to play that way but part of it is them and the other part was the heat, which really dictated our tactics more than anything else."

On the defense: "It was a team effort defending today. Jacob Eisenberg and Jacob Skattner did a really good job on Aidan Apodaca, but at the end of the day it was a team effort. CBU did not have too many dangerous moments. Most were shots from distance that were not realistic for them to score on. We did a good job keeping them out of dangerous spots."

On the PacWest race: "If you win all your home games and tie on the road that is pretty good recipe for success. At the end of the day we were playing one of the top 5 teams in the country, and we got a point on the road. I don't think many teams will get a point in Riverside, we are the only team so far, so I am really proud of these guys."
