Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

'BIGS' POWER POINT LOMA TO HOMECOMING WIN

SAN DIEGO - Preston Beverly and Ziggy Satterthwaite put on quite a show for the Sea Lion fans in this year's Homecoming game. The pair of new 'bigs' dominated in the paint to lead the Point Loma men's basketball team to an 87-72 victory over San Diego Christian.

Satterthwaite hit 10-of-14 shots from the field to score a game-high 23 points. He also had nine rebounds to just miss a double-double. Beverly posted his first career double-double while in a Sea Lions' uniform with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Luke Lovelady added a career-high 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting. Hayden Fredrick led San Diego Christian with 19 points.

The effort from Satterthwaite and Beverly on the glass allowed Point Loma to dominate the boards, 49-20. PLNU outscored the Hawks 26-2 on second chance points and 58-20 on points in the paint.

The Turning Point
The Sea Lions never had a comfortable lead until the final minute of the game as the Hawks just never went away. PLNU held a 37-35 lead at the half, and they were up just three points (61-58) with 11:27 remaining after SDC's Hayden Fredrick knocked three free throws. The Sea Lions responded with an 11-0 run over the next six minutes to push their lead to 72-58. After that point, PLNU never yielded its double-digit lead.

Words from Coach Looney
On Satterthwaite and Beverly: "We envisioned both of them being good players for us, and they are. They both showed what they are capable of tonight."

On San Diego Christian: "I knew coming in it was going to be a tough game. They are undersized, have a lot of guys that can really shoot it and run their sets extremely well. Because of that they really made us pay from the 3-point line."

On the game plan: "We definitely talked about getting as many post touches as we could. I thought for the first 10 minutes all our players did a really good job making sure that happened. We got away from it late in the first half but were able to get back to our game plan in the second half. It is something we are trying to develop as part of our identity. It has just taken a little bit of time to get everyone on the same page."

On the crowd/Homecoming: "I thought the crowd was awesome. We are thankful for everyone that came out to the game."

On his team: "The difficult thing for us right now is just making sure our returners know how to play with the guys we brought in."

More on his team: "We need to get a little better and more unified every day. If we can do that this group has a lot of potential."
