PLNU PREPARES FOR THREE ROAD GAMES TO CLOSE 2017

This week
The Point Loma men's basketball team will continue its early PacWest road swing with a trip to the Bay Area and another to St. George, Utah. The Sea Lions will travel to San Rafael to play the Dominican Penguins on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m., before facing Academy of Art on Monday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. After a 11-day competition hiatus over Christmas, PLNU will continue conference play against the Dixie State Trailblazers on Dec. 30 at 2:30 p.m.

A look at the Sea Lions
The men's basketball team is 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest after suffering two tough losses at Azusa Pacific (66-55) in its PacWest opener and at California Baptist (65-59). PLNU had won four straight contests entering conference play.
 
Preston Beverly is leading the team in points (13.3) and rebounds per game (6.7). He is shooting .486 percent from the field. Josh Rodriguez is pacing the Sea Lions in both assists and free throws made. He ranks second in the PacWest with 5.5 assists per game. Tanner Nelson leads the team in 3-pointers made with 19, while averaging 11.4 ppg.  Ziggy Satterthwaite leads the team in total rebounds with 71 and Skyler White leads the Sea Lions in blocks with 12, which places him in fourth place in the PacWest.
 
Point Loma leads the PacWest scoring defense (66.6 ppg) and rebounding margin (15.5). PLNU is first in both defense (29.4) and offensive rebounding (15.5). The Sea Lions are also second in blocked shots (4.10) and sixth in assists (14.0).
 
Record watch
Josh Rodriguez has put together an impressive first two seasons for the Sea Lions and is climbing up the record books on multiple top 10 lists. He has already passed four people on the all-time assist list to move into seventh and is on the verge of climbing onto the career point and career 3-point list. Below is a list of his standings in the record books and the next person in front.
Career Points: Rodriguez (1033) - 20th, Hayden Lescault (1211)
Career Assists: Rodriguez (400) - 6th, Shawn Stroud (410)
Career 3-pointers: Rodriguez (107) - 10th, Mike Planeta (133)
 
A look at the Penguins
The Dominican men's basketball team is 2-1 in the PacWest (3-7 overall). Dominican has won back-to-back PacWest contests after sealing a win over Fresno Pacific (73-66) and an overtime win over Notre Dame de Namur (67-66). The Penguins were able to outscore the Argonauts in overtime 10-9 to earn the one-point win.
 
Jeremiah Gray leads the team in total points with 223 which places him in the No. 1 spot in the PacWest standings. Gray also leads the Penguins in 3-pointers with 39. Christian Futch leads the team in rebounds with 76 total rebounds and averaging 7.6 rebounds per game. Futch also leads the team in blocks with 17 earning himself the No. 2 spot in the PacWest standings. Jordan Williams posted 27 assists on the season as well as 11 steals.
 
Last season, the Sea Lions and Penguins played their lone PacWest conference game in San Rafael. Point Loma was able to squeeze out a win against Dominican, 81-77, with help from Josh Rodriguez, who scored 25 points, as well as posting five rebounds and five assists.
 
A look at the Urban Knights
The Academy of Art men's basketball team is 2-2 in the PacWest and 3-7 overall. The Urban Knights are coming off of a two-game winning streak. They defeated Notre Dame de Namur (65-56) and earned another win over Holy Names (76-58). In their win against Holy Names, the Urban Knights produced a 3-point percentage of .625, hitting 10-of-16 behind the arc.
 
Leading Academy of Art men's basketball team in total points is Kendall Brown with 15.9 ppg. Brown has made 41 of his 54 free throws earning him a free throw percentage of .759. Cameron Niven leads the team in blocks with five and also in rebounds per game with 6.2. Niven is averaging 8.2 points per game as well.
 
Academy of Art trails right behind PLNU to seal the No. 2 spot for scoring defense in the PacWest (70.2). The Knights also have two players, Cole Morgan and Cobe Williams, that made the top ten in the PacWest standings for total steals with 12.
 
A look at the Trailblazers
The Dixie State men's basketball team is 2-0 in the PacWest and 5-4 overall. The Trailblazers are coming off of a three-game winning streak, after earning a win over Dickinson State (83-73) in addition to their two conference wins over Academy of Art (74-62) and Azusa Pacific (88-73).
 
Trevor Hill leads the Trailblazers in points at 19.7 per game. Hill has made 60 of his 126 attempts from the 3-point range bringing his 3-point percentage up to .476. Brandon Simister takes the No. 1 spot in the PacWest standings for free throw percentage with .929 making 26 out of his 28 attempts on the year. Isaiah Clark leads the team in rebounds at 6.7 per game. Clark also takes the lead for the Trailblazers in blocks with a total of 10 on the season.
 
The Trailblazers have the No. 3 spot in the PacWest standings for rebounding offense (42.6) and also in scoring offense (79.9).
 
Next games
The Point Loma men's basketball team will play Concordia to start of the 2018 calendar year on Jan. 3 playing in Golden Gymnasium starting at 7:30 p.m. The Sea Lions get one day of rest before facing the California Baptist Lancers at home on Jan. 5 with tip off again starting at 7:30 p.m.
