HONOLULU -
Sterling Somers scored a career-high 22 points and
Zach Burnham posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but neither they nor the Point Loma men's basketball team could not stop a huge second-half surge by Chaminade as the Sea Lions fell 94-78 on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Â
The win clinched the No. 4 seed in the PacWest Conference Tournament (Mar. 2-4) for Chaminade (17-9, 13-6 PacWest). It also dropped PLNU (13-12, 9-9 PacWest) into a tie with Azusa Pacific for the fifth seed. Both teams are one game up on Dominican for the final of six spots in the tournament, with all teams having two games left in the regular season.
Â
Chaminade outscored Point Loma 53-28 in the second half to erase a 50-41 halftime-deficit and earn the win. In the first 20 minutes, Burnham already had a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds), and Somers had 14 of his 22 points. But as soon as the second half started the game was all Silverswords.
Â
Chaminade outscored Point Loma 22-4 in the first eight minutes of the second half and the Sea Lions would never again hold the lead. PLNU would cut the lead to one with 7:47 remaining but CUH went on an 18-4 run over the next four minutes to squash any hope of a Sea Lions' comeback.
Â
Kuany Kuany had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with nine rebounds for Chaminade. Rohndell Goodwin added 18 points and Kiran Shastri went for 16. Chaminade had just 12 assists on 35 made baskets.
Â
Burnham was 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free throw line en route to posting his 15 points. Half of his 12 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Somers had six rebounds and three assists to go along with his career-high in scoring (22). He reached the free throw line 13 times, making eight.
Josh Rodriguez was also in double-figures with 10 points, and he had a game-high five assists.
Â
The Sea Lions will close out their Hawaii road trip on Monday, Feb. 20 at BYU-Hawaii (6-18, 4-14 PacWest). The game will tipoff at 9:30 p.m.Â
