ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Point Loma baseball team completed the four-game conference sweep of Holy Names with 5-4 and 14-3 wins on Saturday, Mar. 11, to take over first place in the PacWest standings.
The victories extend the Sea Lions' winning streak to 11 straight games. They are now 14-3 on the season and 8-0 in the PacWest. PLNU is the only team without a conference loss this season. Holy Names fell to 4-17 (1-7 PacWest) with the loses.
Game 1
Point Loma jumped in front 4-1 in the opening game and then held on for a 5-4 victory.
The Sea Lions scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to erase the Hawks' initial 1-0 lead.
Kellen Sheppard tied up the game with an RBI-single in the third to plate
Harrison Ramey. In the fourth, it was
Micah Pries doubling home
Adam Rios.
Tyler Flores added a solo home run in the fifth.
Wyatt Champlin created another run for Point Loma in the sixth as he singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sac fly by Rios.
HNU would cut the Sea Lions' lead to 4-3 with two runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI-hits. PLNU would add an insurance run in the on an RBI-single by
Colby Kaneshiro.
Eric Pierce closed the game out for his sixth save of the season.
Trevor Abshire (2-1) earned the victory after fighting through some early control problems. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs. He struck out five, but also walked six.
Micah Pries was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Seven of the nine starters for Point Loma had hits in the game.

Adam Rios all collected an RBI. Point Loma outhit HNU 9-5.
Game 2
The Sea Lions banged out 14 runs and 15 hits to back starter
Stephen Young as PLNU completed the series sweep with a 14-3 victory.
Point Loma scored in six of the seven innings, including the first five which the Sea Lions capped off with a five-run fifth. Five student-athletes recorded multi-hit games for Point Loma. This is the 10th time in 17 games this season that PLNU has reached double-figure hits in a game.
Colby Kaneshiro was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.
Micah Pries scored a run, knocked in three and had two stolen bases.
Mike Gordner,
Harrison Ramey and
Derek Rustich all added two RBIs apiece.
Young improved to 4-0 and actually raised his season earned run average to 1.67 with the complete game victory. He allowed two hits and three runs (two earned). He struck out and and walked just two. He also recorded nine fly ball outs.
Next game
Point Loma will return home to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday, Mar. 15 for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
