OAKLAND, Calif. - The Point Loma baseball team split a doubleheader against PacWest Conference foe, Academy of Art, on Friday, Apr. 28. In the opener, ARTU's Brett Bovee pitched a complete game to lead the Urban Knights to a 6-4 win. In the second game, five Sea Lions recorded a multi-RBI game, and Point Loma scored in five of the first six innings en route to a 12-2 win.
Â
Point Loma is now 26-17 on the season and in fifth place in the PacWest standings at 17-13. Academy of Art moves to 20-28 (16-18 PacWest).
Â
Game 1
Brett Bovee stymied the Sea Lions' bats through the first seven innings and then held off a rally in the eighth to lead the Urban Knights to a 6-4 win.
Â
Bovee (3-6) allowed four hits to go along with four earned runs over nine innings of work. He walked three and struck out one. He held PLNU hitless until the fifth, and the Sea Lions had just three baserunners in the first seven innings.
Bovee's teammates staked him to a 6-0 lead. The Urban Knights scored one in the first, four in the fourth and another in the sixth. The first five came off PLNU's
Stephen Young (6-2) who entered the game with a 1.47 earned run average. He took his second straight loss after going three innings, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned).
Â
The Sea Lions finally got on the board in the eighth on bases loaded, clearing triple from
Micah Pries. He would come home one batter later on a sacrifice fly by
Ryan Garcia to cut the lead to 6-4, but this is as close as the Sea Lions would get.
Â
Game 2
Ryan Garcia and
Tyler Flores each drove in three runs and
Kevin Lillicrop went the distance to help PLNU bounce back with a 12-2 victory.
Â
Lillicrop (3-4) pitched perhaps his best game of the season, in a contest PLNU desperately needed. He registered his first complete game of the season, allowing eight hits and two runs over nine innings with walking none and striking out six. Most of the threats against Lillicrop came early before he settled down to retire 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.
Â
His teammates helped him out by giving him some leads to work with. PLNU scored one in the first on an RBI-ground out by Garcia and another in the third on a Garcia solo home run. This was his 13th home run of the season, matching his career-high from 2016. He now has 31 career home runs, one behind Kerry Everett for third in the Point Loma school history.
Â
The Sea Lions would add three more runs in the fourth on RBI-hits from Flores and Pries, before breaking the game open with five more runs in the fifth. Flores finished 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, three RBI and two runs scored. Garcia was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
Adam Rios,
Ryan Park and
Micah Pries all added a pair of RBIs for the Sea Lions. These were the first two career RBI for Park who was 1-for-2 with a double, three walks and two runs scored.
Â
Luke Lacy (6-6) took the loss for Academy of Art. He was charged with nine hits and nine runs over four innings of work. He walked six and struck out three.
