SFU DOWNS SEA LIONS FROM DEEP

SAN DIEGO – Point Loma hosted Simon Fraser on Monday night in their home opener. After starting the weekend 0-2 at Cal Poly Pomona, the Sea Lions faced a tough test playing their third game in four days. Simon Fraser started the game with hot shooting as they went 3-of-3 from behind the arc to start the game, leading 13-10 halfway through the first quarter. SFU continued their hot shooting, 50 percent from the field, and had a 25-17 lead after the first quarter.

Point Loma was able to force a couple early turnovers in the second quarter, and found ways to score on the other end to cut the lead to four. Simon Fraser would find their rhythm from three once again, hitting three three-pointers over two and a half minutes, while holding the Sea Lions scoreless in that time. Point Loma was able to close the half on a 13-5 run capped off by a steal and layup by Carol Schroeder in the last seconds, to cut the SFU lead to five.

The Sea Lions were able to carry their momentum into the second half as they opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run that gave them their first lead of the game. Point Loma was able to hold Simon Fraser to only nine third quarter points and held a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter. SFU flipped the script in the fourth quarter as they held PLNU to only three total points through the first five minutes of play, and pushed their lead to seven. The teams would trade baskets down the stretch, but Point Loma was not able to seal the comeback falling 67-59.

Sydney Peterson and Cara Liggins led the Sea Lions with 14 points each, Peterson added four assists while Liggins grabbed four boards in the game. Yuendie Guridi provided a solid offensive presence for Point Loma as well, scoring 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Despite early foul trouble, Grace Brady scored five points and totaled five blocks in limited minutes.
