Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

THIRD QUARTER DROUGHT DOWNS PLNU IN OPENER

POMONA, Calif. – The Sea Lions opened their season with a tough road trip to face Cal Poly Pomona on their home court as part of the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge. Down only two points at the half, the Sea Lions struggled to find their offense early in the third quarter and were unable to get back in the game after going down 12 points through three quarters. The team capitalized on scoring opportunities in the fourth, but were never able to dig out of the hole caused by the third quarter.

Sydney Peterson led the Sea Lions with 18 points going 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Cara Liggins contributed 15 points to the effort, shooting 5-of-10 from the field, as well as grabbing eight rebounds. Five other Sea Lions scored in the game, none of them totaling more than six points.

The Broncos put together a solid offensive effort, especially from deep, shooting 42.9 percent from three as a team. Rebecca Islas led their team with 21 points, five threes, and 10 rebounds on the night.

Thoughts from Coach Faulkner
On the team's offensive struggle: "This was a game of missed opportunities. We missed nine layups in the first quarter and 13 in the first half. We had great looks and just didn't finish."

On Cal Poly Pomona: "Give Cal Poly credit, they hit a ton of 3s on us and we weren't ready for that. They capitalized on our mistakes which is what good teams do."

On the message to the team heading into another game tomorrow: "The message to the team is be better individually and that will make us better collectively. I love coaching this team and these are learning experiences for us. Good teams come back after a tough loss and compete so we need to do that tomorrow."
