SAN DIEGO – Point Loma hosted Biola on Thursday night for their first conference home game of the season. The Eagles came into the match 2-0 in PacWest play after they opened conference play at home last weekend. It was a defensive battle for the teams as they both tallied 11 steals on the night, with the low-scoring affair going in the Sea Lions favor, 60-53.
Coach Faulkner was pleased with the defensive effort as the team held the Eagles to 53 points, a season-best for the Sea Lion defense. Biola shot just 34 percent on the night, including only 18 percent from three-point range. The Eagles did most of their work inside, with 32 of their 53 points coming in the paint, but the Sea Lions held the advantage from three-point range, outscoring the Eagles by 15 from behind the arc.
With a one-point lead heading to the fourth quarter, Point Loma opened the final frame with a 12-4 run to give them a nine-point advantage. Each time the Eagles threatened to mount a comeback the Sea Lions answered with a big three. PLNU was able to secure the win by hitting their free throws down the stretch.
Sydney Peterson led all scorers with 23 points on the night, going 6-of-13 from three, in addition to three rebounds, three assists, and a block.
Cara Liggins just missed a double-double totaling 11 points and nine rebounds on the night.
Grace Brady and
Carol Schroeder each scored six points on the night and combined for another nine rebounds. Tatum Brinley was the high-scorer for the Eagles with 16 points and four steals.
