PLNU UNABLE TO OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT

SAN DIEGO – Point Loma hosted PacWest Preseason favorite Azusa Pacific on Saturday afternoon looking to stay above .500 in conference play. The Cougars came into the game undefeated in PacWest play, averaging 90.7 points per game against conference opponents. The Sea Lions were able to hold APU well below their conference scoring average, and their season scoring average, but were unable to find enough offense for the win, falling 63-50.

Early on, the game was all APU as they held the Sea Lions to only five points in the first quarter. Point Loma found a way to claw their way back into the game with their defense. PLNU held the Cougars to only six third quarter points through the first six and a half minutes of action, cutting the lead to one, but Azusa Pacific rallied over the last three minutes to push their lead back to eight going into the fourth quarter. The Sea Lions were unable to find the stops they needed over the final quarter to make a run for the win.

Sydney Peterson led all scorers with 20 points in the game, for her third 20-plus game this season. Cara Liggins registered a double-double for the Sea Lions, 12 points and 10 rebounds, and helped her cause by going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The Cougars had three players finish with double-digit scoring, led by Daylee Hanson with 17 points.

Turning Point
The Sea Lions were able to cut the Cougar lead to one with only three minutes left in the third quarter, but APU closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to take an eight-point lead into the final quarter giving them the momentum over the final 10 minutes.
