LOS ANGELES - The Sea Lions continue to roll as they win their fifth straight match, and their ninth win in their last 10 total matches. Point Loma headed on the road on Saturday afternoon, after a lengthy home stand, to face an always tough Cal State LA team. The Sea Lions won their previous match with the Golden Eagles 7-2 playing on their home court.
The teams started with doubles play and it would be PLNU who earned the first point of the match, winning 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Playing together for the first time this season,
Shelby Groeneveld and
Michelle Torres earned a much needed point for the Sea Lions in that No. 1 position. Both 2 and 3 doubles would fall giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
It was a back and forth match throughout singles play, but Point Loma would earn the early momentum by taking the first two singles matches.
Gabi Armas would earn the first win for Point Loma, earning a quick 6-1, 6-1 win playing at No. 5.
Michelle Torres finished not long after Armas, taking her match 6-3, 6-2 and giving the Sea Lions a 3-2 lead with four matches still to be decided. Cal State LA would earn the next two wins at the 3 and 4 positions to put them within one point of victory with the top singles competitors still playing.
Carolina Cuevas earned a big three-set win, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, to even the match at four points each. It was
Nikki Newell, playing in the No. 1 position, who would clinch the match for the Sea Lions and keep their win streak alive. Newell battle back after dropping her first set 1-6, and earned two straight 6-4 wins to give the Sea Lions the victory and put another exclamation point on the team's play of late.
